Rebel Art is a school based support program offering Creative Art Therapy for children/adolescents who are disengaged from school due to adverse life experiences. Creative Art Therapy supports health and recovery in trauma because it is a continual agent for transformation. Bringing this into the school curriculum means that children/adolescents have access during school hours to work in collaboration with teachers and school counsellors for more effective support.
This provides students with the chance to re-author the dominant narrative of their challenges as well as a way to explore what is referred to as “post-traumatic growth.” For some, this is a way to find meaning and express the trauma in a safe and meaningful way. CATA believes that the process of art making is a pathway for transforming feelings and perceptions of trauma. This creates a new sense of self.
Benefits of facilitating post-traumatic growth are:
- Discovering/developing strengths and abilities that weren’t apparent prior to trauma thereby encouraging confidence.
- Feeling stronger as a person in the knowledge one can survive great difficulty and suffering.
- Developing techniques for self-regulation.
- Gaining a deeper insight of self and life leading to growth and development.
