Colour Me Upside Down engages special needs children with different levels of cognitive and motor skills, and their student companions. CATA set up art stations that engage, promote, encourage and assist the children to create at their pace and capacity. Children are encouraged to explore through art and have the chance to learn social skills, gain cognitive growth and practice sensorimotor skills such as sensory stimulation and hand-eye coordination.
The art stations are flexible in their content so that the children and their companions can find what interests them. Art Therapists and volunteers help support a creative collaboration between the child and their student companions. The intention is to facilitate connections between child and companion in a fun and experiential way.
Colour Me Upside Down Program:
- Encourages social interaction and collaboration
- Supports creative expression in a safe, non-judgemental way
- Creates connections
- Provides debrief art therapy session for adolescent carers to process their experience and emotions
