CATA has coordinated the school holiday program for Very Special Kids Hospice since 2016 and continues to be committed to offering a fun and compassionate program for children with chronic conditions and severe disabilities. The school holiday program offers a varied program consisting of hospice-based activities and a variety of incursions. Excursions consist of taking the children/adolescents out into the local community for interactive scavenger hunts.
There are four programs that are run throughout the year and the aim for these is to provide the children/adolescents a multi-sensory encounter at the hospice and in the greater community through outings. The intention is to create an exciting and inclusive environment in the hospice over the school holidays where the program makes each child/adolescent feel special and gives them something to look forward to.
The holiday program offers a safe and non-threatening environment which aims to meet the broad range of an individual’s social, emotional, recreational, physical, intellectual and creative needs. It ensures that these children/adolescents will have access to the types of activities and outings that ordinary children are accustomed to. Each program takes into account the suitability of the needs of the children/adolescents and is structured for flexibility depending on the aptitude of the children.
CATA adopts a trauma-informed practice and our Art Therapists uphold a person-centred and holistic approach to support children/adolescents with chronic and life limiting conditions. With this intention, the holiday program maintains the child’s integrity and aims to empower then through creative and interactive engagement.
